In 1913, during the Mexican Revolution, Petra Luna's mother dies. Before her father is forced to fight with the federales, the 12-year-old promises to take care of her grandmother and siblings. When the federales attack her town, Petra and her family flee towards the United States. Petra does not give up her dreams of learning how to read and write even though her grandmother calls them barefoot dreams. She never loses hope during the dangerous journey North, a place where her barefoot dreams can come true.
